Diesel fuel is liquid fuel, which is a mixture of hydrocarbons, obtained from kerosene-gas oil fractions of straight-run oil distillation, used in diesel internal combustion engines and for gas-turbine powerplants. The main indicator of diesel fuel is the cetane number (L-45). The cetane number characterizes the fuel ability to flame in a compression chamber.
Diesel fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons, obtained by oil refining and selection of certain fractions from it. The basis of it is hydrocarbons with a boiling point of 200-350 ° C.
The fuel composition is completely different from the gasoline composition, because the ways of the fuel-air mixture ignition in the petrol and diesel engines cylinders are different. Gasoline ignites from a spark of a spark plug, and its important property is knock rating, denoted by an octane number. In a diesel engine, the fuel ignites spontaneously because of high compression ratio, and its main quality characteristic is the cetane number, which characterizes the fuel flammability or the time required to ignite the fuel in the cylinder. The higher it is, the less time is required. Diesel fuel cetane number is 40 - 50 (most often 45).
Summer diesel fuel is used at ambient temperature to 0 degrees Celsius and above. Its cetane number is higher than 45, the density at 20 degrees Celsius is not more than 860 kg / m, a viscosity at 20 degrees Celsius is from 3 to 6 mm² / s, a fuel pour point is 10 degrees Celsius. One of the problems of summer diesel fuel is water condensation in the fuel tank. The water flakes off during storage of diesel fuel and is collected at the fuel tank bottom, because diesel fuel density is less than 1kg/l. Slug in the pipeline completely blocks engine running. Therefore, if a car was refueled in the summer and then it was not used for a long time, then with the onset of cold season, summer diesel fuel must be drained and refueled with winter diesel fuel.
Winter diesel fuel - marking of this type is used at ambient temperature to -30 degrees Celsius. The cetane number of winter fuel is -45, the density at 20 degrees Celsius is from 1,8 to 5 mm2 /s, a fuel pour point is- 35 degrees Celsius.
Arctic diesel fuel is one of three types of brands obtained after oil distillation. It is used at ambient temperature to - 50 degrees Celsius. Its cetane number is 40, the density at 20 degrees Celsius is not more than 830 kg / m3, the viscosity at 20 degrees Celsius is from 1.4 to 4 mm / s, a fuel pour point is -55 degrees Celsius.
